How a woven fabric is specified: the denim example
A reading of how woven fabric is specified, using denim: construction, dyeing and finishing, and the quality checks that follow from each choice.
What does a fabric specification actually contain?
A woven fabric is specified by fixing three things in writing: the construction of the cloth, the dyeing and finishing route, and the quality checks that will decide acceptance. Denim is a useful example because all three are visible in the finished garment, and because the trade has settled vocabulary for each. The specification is not a description of the fabric; it is the set of decisions a mill can be held to.
A specification is a document that a mill can quote against and an inspector can test against. It names the fibre or blend, the yarn count and spinning method, the weave and its direction, the weight per unit area, the colour and dyeing route, the finishing steps, and the tolerances allowed on each. It also names the test methods that will be used if a dispute arises.
Denim illustrates why each line matters. A 12 oz/yd² denim woven from ring-spun warp and open-end weft behaves differently from the same weight woven entirely from open-end yarn, even if the greige fabric looks similar on a table. The spinning method changes the surface, the strength and the way the indigo sits on the yarn. A specification that names only the weight has left the important part unsaid.
The same logic applies to the weave. Denim is a twill, usually a 3x1, and the direction of the twill line, right hand or left hand, is a specification item because it affects both appearance and how the fabric twists after washing. Buyers who work through a technical guide to denim specification, such as the one published at denim construction and quality notes, tend to find that the document is organised around exactly these decisions rather than around marketing names.
How is denim construction described?
Construction is described by yarn, weave and weight, in that order.
Yarn. The warp is usually ring-spun, which gives a slightly irregular, hairy surface that takes indigo unevenly and produces the characteristic vertical shading after wash. The weft may be ring-spun or open-end. Open-end yarn is more regular and cheaper, and it gives a flatter, more uniform surface. A specification states which is used in each direction, and the yarn count in the appropriate system.
Weave. Denim is a twill, most often 3x1, meaning the warp thread passes over three weft threads and under one. The diagonal line this produces is called the twill line. Right-hand twill runs up to the left, left-hand twill runs up to the right. The choice is not cosmetic only: it interacts with the direction of yarn twist and with the skew that appears after laundering.
Weight. Weight is given in ounces per square yard in the United States and in grams per square metre elsewhere. The conversion is not a simple mental arithmetic step, and a specification should state which unit is authoritative. Common ranges run from around 10 oz/yd² for lighter shirting denim to 14 oz/yd² and above for heavy jeans. Weight is measured on the finished, washed fabric or on the greige, and the specification must say which.
Stretch. If elastane is present, the specification states the percentage, the direction of stretch, and the recovery requirement. Recovery is usually expressed as a percentage of the original dimension after a defined extension and relaxation cycle. Without a recovery figure, a stretch denim specification is incomplete.
How do dyeing and finishing change the specification?
Dyeing and finishing are where the same greige fabric becomes several different products.
Indigo dyeing. Indigo is applied to the warp yarn before weaving, either in rope form or on a slasher range. Rope dyeing dips the rope of yarn repeatedly, which builds colour from the inside out and leaves the core lighter; this is what allows abrasion to reveal pale yarn. Slasher dyeing passes a sheet of yarn through the dye bath, which is faster and gives a more uniform shade. The specification names the route because the two do not fade alike.
Finishing. Raw denim is sold as woven and dyed, without washing. Rinsed denim has had a light wash to remove sizing and some surface colour. Stonewash uses abrasive stones or, more commonly now, enzymes and other agents to simulate wear. Each step changes the dimensions of the fabric, so the specification must state whether the weight and shrinkage figures refer to the loom state or to the finished state.
Shrinkage, skew and bias. Woven cotton denim shrinks on washing, and twill fabrics also skew: the weft threads rotate away from perpendicular, so the side seam of a garment spirals. A specification sets a maximum shrinkage percentage in warp and weft, and a maximum skew. These are measured after a defined wash procedure, and the procedure is part of the specification.
Which quality checks follow from those choices?
Quality checks are chosen to test the claims the specification makes.
Tensile and tear strength. These test the yarn and the weave. Tear strength is often the more revealing of the two for denim, because a twill can pass a tensile test while tearing easily at a cut edge.
Abrasion resistance. This tests the surface and, indirectly, the dyeing route. A rope-dyed warp with a pale core behaves differently under abrasion from a slasher-dyed warp of the same nominal shade.
Colour fastness. Fastness to washing, rubbing, light and perspiration is tested separately, and each has its own scale and method. A denim that passes a wash fastness test may still crock badly on a white sofa.
Dimensional stability. Shrinkage and skew are measured after the specified wash, on a marked square of fabric, and the result is compared with the tolerance in the specification.
Inspection. Fabric is commonly inspected on a four-point system, where defects are assigned 1 to 4 points according to their length or severity, and the total is expressed per 100 square yards or per 100 linear metres. The specification states the acceptance threshold. Without a stated threshold, the four-point score is only a number.
What should be written down before the order is placed?
Before an order is placed, the specification should be complete enough that two different mills would produce the same fabric, and two different inspectors would reach the same verdict.
That means: fibre content and any blend percentages; yarn count and spinning method for warp and weft; weave type and twill direction; weight with the unit and the state of the fabric; colour with a physical standard and a tolerance; dyeing route; finishing route; shrinkage and skew limits with the test method; stretch and recovery figures if elastane is present; the test methods for strength, abrasion and fastness; the inspection system and its acceptance threshold; and the labelling requirements for the markets where the fabric or garment will be sold.
Labelling is part of the specification, not an afterthought. Fibre labelling rules differ between the European Union and the United States, and regulated substances lists differ as well. A specification that ignores them can produce a fabric that is technically correct and commercially unusable.
Does the same logic apply outside denim?
Yes. The denim example is convenient because the vocabulary is well established, but the structure holds for any woven fabric. A poplin, a canvas or a twill for workwear is specified by the same categories: yarn, weave, weight, colour, finish, tolerances and tests. What changes is the values, not the shape of the document.
The practical consequence is that a specification should be readable by someone who was not in the room when it was agreed. If a line can be read two ways, it will be, and the disagreement will surface at inspection rather than at the desk where it could have been settled in a sentence.
